This is the bi-monthly column I wrote for the Dec 09-Jan 10 edition of a Florida Keys fishing publication entitled "Fishing the Florida Keys".

I first heard of Cobia not long after I moved to the Florida Panhandle in 1981. During their spring migration, Cobia were a favorite target of Okaloosa Island public fishing pier anglers near Destin. Pier fishing for Cobia there was a full contact event, potentially hazardous to your health, as the whipping surf rods filled the air with heavy, feathered jigs with anglers jockeying for first presentation to the passing quarry so I didn’t try it very often.

Moving to Jacksonville in 1982, I learned that Cobia were highly sought there also. Catching those fish intrigued me but in the Jacksonville area they were more of an offshore species and I did not have ready access to a boat in those days. In addition to being delectable table fare they were touted as strong, powerful fighters. That re(edited)tion was corroborated by a story I read one day in the “Florida Times Union” of a Coast Guard response to a small (small being a relative term) boat sinking incident. Apparently the vessel operator had a fifty-five gallon bait well aboard brim full of seawater and live bait. He green gaffed, meaning before the animal was exhausted, a large Cobia he’d caught onto the deck of his boat. The fish immediately set about destroying the bait well with its thrashing tail, which flooded the deck of the boat eventually causing it to sink. Talk about an expensive fishing trip.    more ...

FISHING FANS ASKED TO NOMINATE OUTDOOR LOCATIONS IN NEED OF TLC

Posted by: fishingfan on Wednesday November 25, 2009 (11:38:03)   (754 Reads)
CAN WE FIX IT? YES BOV CAN!
Bovril Great Outdoors Revival campaign launches

The Great British Outdoors is set for a spectacular revamp following the launch of a new campaign.

Bovril, a favorite for generations of outdoors enthusiasts, is inviting nominations for five outdoors locations that deserve a unique makeover. From broken beauty spots, to rundown riding paths, and forlorn fences, Bovril has created a crack ‘Outdoors Revival Hit Squad’ to tackle even the toughest restoration challenge.

Encouraging anglers to get involved with the Bovril Great Outdoors Revival campaign are outdoor enthusiasts John Craven and Philippa Forrester, both of whom are well known for championing the Great British countryside.

John Craven, commented, “In my mind, there are few places on earth more beautiful than the British Countryside, so I am delighted to be supporting Bovril Great Outdoors Revival Campaign. From the humble scout hut to a rickety old fence, there are many things in our surroundings that could do with some tender loving care! So come on, get involved by nominating your favourite outdoors location and you could see it restored before your very eyes.”

Philippa Forester further commented “‘I really believe that there is nothing better than being outside in the fresh air. Going for a relaxing ramble in the beautiful British countryside is one of my favorite things to do in my spare time, so I am delighted to be supporting Bovril Great Outdoors Revival Campaign. So come on UK, get voting for your favorite places to get the restoration treatment!’

Nominations for outdoors locations that deserve some loving care, are now being accepted at www.bovril.co.uk. All nominations will be displayed on the website, where the public can vote for the most deserving projects. The top 100 projects from the public vote will then be narrowed down to five winners by a team of Bovril judges.

The Bovril Outdoors Revival Hit Squad will crack open the paint brushes and power tools in January 2010, with the ‘big reveal’ of the first 3 finished projects in March 2010. Each project will be undertaken by a specialist team of builders skilled in outdoor restoration work, with up to £20,000 being spent at each location, £100,000 in total.    more ...

2009 Season Report for Blackwater Lodge Salmon Fishery

Posted by: bwlodge on Sunday November 15, 2009 (09:26:31)   (424 Reads)
Ireland's Blackwater Lodge Salmon Fishery proprietor Ian Powell looks at the results for the 2009 season & reaches some interesting conclusions.

The Biggest Fish Ever since 1986?
On September 15th. last, Tony Murtagh from Co. Dublin landed & released a fish estimated at approx. 25lb. weight.
This huge fish was taken on spinner on the Island Stream on Beat 6 - Lower Kilmurry.
The fish was rather coloured but fin perfect and very well conditioned – being very deep bodied & broad-backed.
It was quickly released without even a picture being taken as they had no camera & no weigh net!
It measured 96cm (38") long with an estimated girth of 50cm (20").    more ...

The site has over 15,000 pages with many articles relating to match and coarse fishing. The administrator of talkangling also mentions that the forum is the busiest in the UK for match fishing with loads of the top pro anglers using the site on a daily basis.

Well worth a visit.

Environment Agency - Reel Life Ezine

Posted by: fishingfan on Thursday August 06, 2009 (10:16:14)   (913 Reads)
You may of noticed that recently when renewing your rod licence that you know longer got the magazine Reel Life sent to you through the post.

Well as well offering the ability to buy your rod licence online, they're moved this to an E-Zine, which they update 4 times a year. You can subscribe to this and see past issues of the E-Zine on the EA Website here.

What I particularly like about it is the ability to look for updates to fishing in your region, and online this is possible by selecting your part of the map.
